There have been a few mechanical tweaks made to the games for their new home on the 3DS. The ability to challenge trainers again, breed Pokémon to hatch eggs, even catch something shiny and many more, started in these versions. Gold and Silver implements plenty of other goodies not found previously but have become a staple since. Gym leaders are tougher, puzzles need solving and catching them all is a must to become a Pokémon Master. There are also moments where players need to help others in order to progress their own journey. Storyline contains plenty of content such as the return of Team Rocket and a mysterious rival. Steel and Dark-type Pokémon make their debut along with different attacks to bring a whole new level of strategy to your gameplay. Over 100 additional Pokémon have been included into Gold and Silver along with the original 151 from Red and Blue. That’s a hefty amount of creatures to catch which offers plenty of variety when it comes to building a team.

Replaying Gold and Silver in almost a decade gives it an exciting feel like checking it out for the first time ever. Of course it doesn’t contain anything drastically new but it still sort of feels like there is.

Anyone who has played the original release will remember everything as it was. Obviously the sense of nostalgia is in effect which makes things even more exciting. I am so into it right now, even going as far as to dust off old guidebooks from deep in the attic. For many fans it was their first Pokémon title and it felt that way for me as soon as the Virtual Console releases were made available. But I suppose I could get into some details on how it has remained a classic and reemerged as a monumental point in the franchise. It’s still as incredible as it once was and we could end the review right here. Now, we get to revisit the Johto region once again with the re-release of Pokémon Gold and Silver on the 3DS Virtual Console to relive the greatness of Pokémon’s Gen II. Things were bigger and badder than ever before with tons of added content. Fast forward to 2009 when the Gen IV remake of the games released in the forms of HeartGold and SoulSilver. Added Pokémon, new features and a growing hype led to success after the phenomenon of the Pokémon craze took place. Gold and Silver were massive hits and shifted the landscape of the series. So far, Nintendo of America’s own Twitter account has been silent on the matter, so if you’re in the US, you might not want to get your hopes up just yet.The year was 2000 and we were living in the future of Pokémon.

We’re expecting the digital versions of Gold and Silver to cost $10 apiece – following the Virtual Console versions of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow – but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Nintendo charge a premium for the boxes.Īlso unknown at this point is whether or not these will be available outside of Europe.

We don’t know if the boxes will have anything besides the download code inside (a game manual would be awesome, personally speaking) nor do we know how much they’ll cost. Unfortunately for us, Nintendo was painfully short on details when it comes to these retail releases. It’s a nice little throwback to a time when Pokemania was taking the world by storm. They’re almost exact replicas of the boxes for the original Game Boy releases, only with 3DS branding instead. The image Nintendo shared shows us what the boxes will look like. Still, if you’d like to have a box to display on your shelf, then you’ll definitely want to pick these up. There’s no cartridge in those boxes, only a download code for the games, so this isn’t the full-blown retail release we’re sure many Pokemon fans would love to see. Earlier today, Nintendo of Europe revealed that boxes for Pokemon Gold and Silver will be offered at retail.
